DFKI
Research building opened in Bremen
One of the most important research institutions in Germany in the field of artificial intelligence has opened a new building in Bremen. The DFKI intends to use the extension to advance research into future topics, according to a press release.
The employees of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) are working on how humans and machines can work together, on space and underwater robotics as well as quantum computers and artificial intelligence.
"The extension of the DFKI Bremen creates more space for artificial intelligence, offers new rooms, new laboratories and opens up new opportunities for the research areas," said the head of the DFKI, computer scientist Antonio Krüger, in the press release. According to Krüger, the work of the DFKI in Bremen is of national importance.
"The DFKI extension once again demonstrates the importance of research for Bremen as a science location," said Bremen's mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) in the press release. "And not just when it comes to artificial intelligence, but also in digitalization, robotics and lightweight construction." Research secures and creates highly qualified jobs in Bremen.
According to a DFKI spokesperson, around 14 million euros were invested in the extension, which was opened on Friday. The result is a 17 m high multifunctional hall with an artificial crater landscape. An existing "maritime exploration hall", which has a salt water basin, was also supplemented with test facilities, workshops and offices.
Around a third of the money for the construction came from the European Regional Development Fund, which is intended to compensate for imbalances within the European Union. Around two thirds of the funds are from DFKI. The research center, a non-profit limited liability company, is financed by public funding and development contracts from industry.
Anna Christmann (Green Party), the Federal Government's coordinator for aerospace, said in the press release: "By focusing on the rapid transfer of research results into real applications, the DFKI in Bremen generates great benefits for the economy and society."
