MC Technologies
Not a hobbyist solution!
Use an expensive controller plus mobile router or just a DIY solution based on a Raspberry PI? "Neither" is the conviction at MC Technologies. Is it possible to be cost-effective and still achieve high quality?
"Time and again, we have to deal with customers who build or program their own remote maintenance solutions based on hobbyist computers such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino or BeagleBone," says Bernhard Bleitner, Technical Managing Director of MC Technologies. "These solutions often fail as soon as the devices are in the field: They prove to be unreliable, have no approval, have inadequate command of mobile radio technology or are housed in unsuitable enclosures." The Managing Director understands this customer clientele: "Oversized and cost-intensive control units plus mobile routers are often used in the field for these applications because only control units are easy to program, have the necessary interfaces and master transmission protocols. - Customers are tempted to opt for cheaper solutions."
MC-Technologies has set out to enter precisely this field: According to Bleitner, the MC100 GPIO mobile radio gateway contains all the necessary functions in a compact IoT gateway. The core elements of the gateway are a freely programmable Linux system and an integrated LTE cellular modem. It is equipped with analog inputs and digital inputs and outputs for connecting sensors and actuators. Node-RED, a popular, simple graphical development tool, can be used to transfer measured values, switching and counter statuses as well as calculations to company servers, visualization software or cloud services via the LTE mobile network. IoT protocols such as MQTT, OPC-UA and MODBUS are supported. In addition, simple messages can be sent directly to a smartphone via email, SMS or Telegram, a WhatsApp-like messenger, for special events. It is also easy to control connected devices via the messenger. MC-Technologies has already implemented the first applications - which can also be seen at the trade fair. Bleitner: "In one example, we have now replaced a PLC plus router with our gateway: We connect the gateway to a WinCC client using Node-RED and OPC UA."
