Wind farms, machines, CT scanners - nothing works today without software and networking. On the one hand, this software is often not perfect and needs to be kept up to date. On the other hand, systems change and need to be re-parameterized. This usually involves different players in different security areas. For example, an IT service provider may operate the IT infrastructure of several wind farms belonging to different energy companies. Their service technicians, who use this IT infrastructure for remote maintenance of the wind turbines, should not have access to the energy company's sensitive data - a tricky issue. Steffen Fries (46) from Siemens Corporate Technology in Munich has developed a solution that gives service technicians simple but secure digital access to the turbines. Everything works via existing remote maintenance tools. Fries' other inventions also include several patents for key generation and storage.
