Inka Krischke,

Up to four CAN-FD interfaces

The CAN-PCIe/402-FD is a PC board developed by esd for the PCIe bus, which has one, two or four galvanically isolated CAN-FD interfaces in accordance with ISO 11898-2.

The CAN FD interfaces are accessible via one DSUB9 connector per CAN FD channel. The board is available in several hardware designs, for example as a board with two CAN FD interfaces on an adapter board with a separate front panel, as a low-profile version or as a board whose CAN FD interfaces are connected via a 37-pin DSUB connector in the front panel. The CAN FD interfaces are designed in accordance with ISO 11898-1:2015. They are controlled via the ISO 16845:2004-certified 'esdACC' (esd Advanced CAN Core), which is implemented in the Altera FPGA.

All CAN FD boards from esd are fully downward compatible with Classical CAN and are therefore also suitable for Classical CAN applications. The FPGA supports bus mastering (firstparty DMA). This allows the 'CAN-PCIe/402-FD' to initiate write cycles to the host CPU RAM independently of the CPU or the system's DMA controller. This reduces the host CPU load and the overall latency. The use of MSI (Message Signaled Interrupts) also enables use in hypervisor environments, for example.

Migration to CAN FD

In 2011, work began to push the existing limits of classic CAN in terms of the maximum achievable data rate - the idea of CAN FD was born. But is it really worth migrating to CAN FD now?
