EdgeXFoundry
Standardized framework for the IoT
During the Hannover Messe, the Linux Foundation announced the launch of EdgeXFoundry - a consortium of over 50 companies - with the aim of creating a unified framework for IoT edge computing.
The open source project aims to create an ecosystem for interoperable components such as sensors in order to accelerate the market for industrial IoT. According to the Linux Foundation, strong fragmentation and the lack of a common framework have so far hindered the broad adoption and market growth of IoT. The EdgeXFoundry unites the market on a common open framework and builds an ecosystem of companies that offer in-teroperable plug-and-play components. Designed for any hardware or operating system and for any combination of application environments, the EdgeX-
architecture is designed to enable fast and easy interoperability between connected devices, applications and services across a wide range of applications. A certification program will maintain interoperability between software developed by the community.
"Success in the Internet of Things is dependent on a healthy ecosystem that can deliver interoperability and drive digital transformation," said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation. "EdgeX Foundry aligns market leaders around a common framework that will drive IoT adoption and allow organizations to focus on developing innovative use cases to increase profitability."
