Snapshots with the Raspberry Pi
RS Components is expanding its range of Raspberry Pi accessories: A camera module can be used to create videos or photos. In addition to HD quality, the module also offers additional functions such as time-lapse and slow motion.
The new camera module can be connected to any Raspberry Pi board or the Raspberry Pi Compute Module. According to RS Components, it contains a high-quality and high-sensitivity eight megapixel IMX219PQ-C MOS image sensor from Sony that supports high-speed video imaging for 1080p, 720p60 and VGA90 video modes. The module also works with the image sensor pipeline on the Raspberry Pi, which offers advanced noise reduction, automatic gain control (AGC), white balance (AWB) and correction for distortion and lens shading. Functions such as time-lapse and slow motion are also possible.
Other features of the module include a maximum supported resolution of 3280 x 2464 pixels, module dimensions of 23.86 (L) x 25 (W) x 9 mm (H) and an operating temperature range of -20° C to + 60° C. Two versions are available from RS Components: The standard version is designed for visible light, the Pi Noir version is infrared sensitive.
The board is accessed via MMAL or V4L APIs. Online libraries such as Python or Picamera can also be used.
