More than 260 IoT and edge computing professionals from a wide range of industries, organizations and functions participated in the Eclipse Foundation's online survey between April 1, 2022 and June 15, 2022. With the survey, Europe's largest open source organization aims to gain a better understanding of the IoT and edge computing ecosystems. In particular, it identified the requirements, priorities and challenges facing organizations that provide and deploy commercial solutions, including those based on open source technologies.

The most important results:

  • More and more companies are viewing IoT and edge computing as strategic, with investment decisions being made by senior management in 38% of cases. This is an increase of 3 percent compared to 2021.
  • 73 percent of companies include open source in their deployment plans. This clearly shows that the dominant IoT and edge platforms will either be completely open source or at least partially based on open source. Only 27 percent of companies that use IoT and edge technologies state that they do not use open source technologies.
  • According to the respondents, the most important advantages of using open source include: the ability to adapt or influence the code in projects (30 percent), flexibility (22 percent) and cost benefits (16 percent).
  • The three biggest challenges in the IoT and edge sector are: 1) connectivity 2) security 3) data collection and analysis.
  • There is a trend towards a hybrid cloud strategy. 42% of respondents say that IoT deployments use or will use a hybrid cloud (i.e. consisting of two or more different cloud infrastructures, e.g. private and public).
