Inka Krischke,

IPCs take over PLC functions

The industrial computers in EFCO's Eagle Eyes family are equipped with 16 digital, galvanically isolated IOs as standard and are suitable for taking over the tasks of a small controller or emulating 'exotic' interfaces.

The SmartSL U7-130 is EFCO's smallest fanless IPC in pocketbook format and has 16 digital IOs that are directly accessible on the front panel (GPIO).

EFCO has equipped the Eagle Eyes family with 16 digital, programmable, galvanically isolated IOs that can be operated directly at all control voltage levels between 5 and 48 V(DC). Each output can be loaded with a maximum of 100 mA and can be clocked up to 400 kHz. The maximum switching delay is 15 µs. According to the manufacturer, the interfaces designated as General Purpose IO are also in no way inferior to industrial small controllers in terms of overvoltage resistance: In accordance with UL 1577, the inputs can withstand up to 2500 V for 60 seconds.

Each of the 16 IOs can be individually defined as an input or output. The manufacturer discloses all information on this and - in addition to drivers for Windows and Linux - provides a demo tool including its source code. Programmers can integrate the IOs into their algorithms via the API or the supplied Windows library, which can be integrated into all common programming languages such as C# or Python. Direct access to the small display of the computers is similarly straightforward, for example to show the customer logo or to provide relevant service information, such as the current power consumption of the individual PoE interfaces.

Another important application of the 16 digital IOs of the IPCs is the emulation of interfaces that are not (or no longer) supported on the hardware side. Examples of this are the parallel LPT interface in accordance with IEEE 1284, or the GPIB bus (IEEE 488 or IEC 625), which can still be used to address devices in the laboratory equipment industry today.
