What are 'cloud services'?

Cloud computing types are deployment models that allow you to determine how much control you have over the information and types of services you provide. There are three main types.

Cloud computing types are deployment models that allow you to determine how much control you have over the information and service types you want to deploy. There are three main types of cloud computing services, also known as cloud computing stacks, as they build on each other.

  • IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service): Used for internet-based access to storage and computing power. With IaaS, the most basic type of cloud computing, you use IT infrastructure - servers and virtual computers, storage, networks and operating systems - from a cloud provider and pay for these services on a per-use basis.
  • PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service): Provides developers with the tools they need to create and host web applications. PaaS is designed to give users access to the components they need to quickly develop and run mobile and web applications over the internet. You don't have to worry about setting up and managing the underlying infrastructure of servers, storage, networks and databases.
  • SaaS (Software-as-a-Service): Used for web-based applications. SaaS is a method of delivering software applications over the internet, with cloud providers hosting and managing the software applications. Access via the cloud makes it easier to use the same application on all your devices at the same time.
