The current installation figures

Every year, the Profibus User Organization (PNO) publishes the installed base of devices with Profibus&Profinet International communication technology interfaces. The latest figures are now available.

I/O-Link's growth curve is enormous: 40% more nodes were sold in 2018 than in the previous year.

According to the PNO, around 5.1 million devices equipped with a Profinet interface were brought onto the market in 2018. The previous year's record figure of 4.5 million was therefore increased by a further 0.6 million. This means that a total of 26 million Profinet devices were automating production at the end of 2018. With 2.4 million devices installed, the annual figure for Profibus has even risen slightly compared to the previous year. At almost 61 million, the total number has now exceeded another threshold. The sum of the two annual figures is also an all-time high at 7.5 million.

The development of Profibus in process automation also remains stable. At 0.8 million, the annual value achieved in 2018 is slightly below the previous year's figure. Of the total number of around 61 million Profibus devices, a total of 12.3 million - i.e. 20% - were used in process automation systems.

Profisafe's development in 2018 was also the highest annual figure achieved to date, with 2.2 million nodes brought onto the market, which corresponds to growth of almost 25% compared to the previous year. With a total of 11 million nodes, Profisafe clearly exceeded the 10 million mark.

As in previous years, IO-Link also set a record in two respects in 2018. Firstly, 3.3 million IO-Link nodes were launched on the market, which equates to growth of just over 40% compared to the previous year. With the resulting total number of 11.4 million IO-Link nodes, the 10 million hurdle was also clearly exceeded here.
