Nokia and Bosch sound out 5G mobile communications standard

At the Digital Summit in Tallinn, Estonia, Bosch and Nokia are presenting a demonstrator that combines the upcoming 5G mobile communications standard with Industry 4.0 solutions. 5G is set to increase the speed of mobile data transmission tenfold from 2019.

Bosch Rexroth intends to offer 5G-capable products and solutions at the same time as the introduction of the 5G standard (expected in 2019).

5G increases the transmission rate in the mobile network to more than ten gigabits per second. In addition, the standard also improves real-time behavior and transmission robustness. Both are important prerequisites for wirelessly networking intelligent actuators and sensors in factories and plants and processing huge amounts of data from production in real time. At the same time, super-fast data transfer is an important prerequisite for cross-border cooperation between companies in Europe and worldwide. Dr. Stefan Aßmann, responsible for Connected Industry at Bosch, comments: "Industry 4.0 does not stop at national borders!"

Bosch Rexroth, the wholly-owned Bosch subsidiary for drive and control technology, has developed a corresponding demonstrator together with the central Bosch Group Research department and Nokia. "We are already exploring the potential of 5G's capabilities for the factory of the future," says Rolf Najork, CEO of Bosch Rexroth. Najork continues: "As an automation specialist, we will expand our collaboration with Nokia on 5G to other areas such as augmented reality, autonomous, driverless transport systems for internal material flow and cloud-based applications in manufacturing.

Estonia is hosting the Digital Summit as part of its Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Numerous European heads of state and government will meet there on September 29 to discuss and learn about the prospects of digital technologies and their impact on everyday life.
