New protocol for Industry 4.0
At a joint workshop of the Industrial Internet Consortium and the Industry 4.0 platform on September 21, Bosch presented a new protocol for the exchange of data in networked industry.
Thanks to the PPM protocol (PPMP, Production Performance Management Protocol) that has now been introduced, small and medium-sized companies, for example, should be able to transfer data from their sensors supplied to manufacturers to the production systems of large companies quickly, easily and securely. The protocol is freely available and free of charge.
The protocol developed by Bosch experts supports Production Performance Management (PPM). According to Bosch CEO Dr. Volkmar Denner, this process plays a central role in Industry 4.0. The background: huge amounts of data are collected and analyzed in production with the help of sensors. The aim is to improve production processes. Do all components of a production line really work together optimally? Is one component slowing down the process? Does a machine require an unusually large amount of power? Has a drive motor overheated and threatens to fail? These and other questions can be answered - and faults eliminated - with a PPM system. At the same time, PPM enables efficient and comprehensive control of production.
In order to be able to control production processes in the best possible way, the numerous sensors and machines at one location must supply their data to the central PPM software. This is very time-consuming, as all these machines and sensors speak many different languages. Communication between and among them is difficult. Bosch has developed the PPMP so that machines and sensors can communicate better.
