With 'nuSIM', Deutsche Telekom wants to transfer the functions of the classic SIM directly to the chipset. According to the company, dispensing with a physical SIM card should considerably simplify the construction of an IoT device, as it eliminates a key component along with the associated logistics and handling costs. 'nuSIM' is integrated directly into the modem chip. A secure process ensures that the SIM data is programmed during the production of the module or IoT end device. According to Deutsche Telekom, further advantages will arise along the value chain: Device manufacturers will have better design options thanks to smaller modules and longer battery life. End users should benefit from lower device costs and no longer have to deal with SIM cards. The Telekom solution should make it much easier to get started with IoT projects.

'nuSIM' should be commercially available in the second half of 2019. Deutsche Telekom is developing the solution with partners from the fields of IoT chips, modules and digital security, such as Altair Semiconductor, Qualcomm Technologies, Samsung Electronics, Telit and Giesecke+Devrient. A common specification is intended to ensure interoperability for the secure provision of SIM data during module or device production.
