Essentium has been looking for ways to support the fight against the pandemic under the leadership of the specially assembled COVID-19 Response Strategy team. The company is making its capacities and expertise in the production of materials and solutions for additive manufacturing available for this purpose.
As a first step, Essentium has developed a protective mask kit consisting of a reusable 3D-printed mask frame and filter media, which is now in production. The first batch of 500 masks will be delivered this week to the police and fire departments of Pflugerville, a town close to Essentium's headquarters. As Essentium is currently focusing its resources on the production of this personal protective equipment (PPE), the company anticipates an initial production capacity of 5,000 units per week.
Lars Uffhausen, COO, CFO and co-founder of Essentium, comments: "The understanding of a first responder has changed overnight. In addition to our medical, police and emergency services, there is now an extended circle of first responders. These include employees of grocery stores, delivery services and garbage collection, who let us stay safe at home. I feel impressed by their commitment. While Essentium cannot be a first responder, we can be a second line responder. Where the PPE supply chain falters, we can step in. We have stepped in and can act quickly to deliver reliable solutions with reproducible quality and on a large scale."
