The German government's "We versus Virus" hackathon on the weekend of 20-22 March 2020 showed that networking, commitment and creativity can make the most of digital opportunities and serve common goals. Solution approaches in numerous domains were put out to tender and worked on in teams. With record-breaking success: while the organizers expected around 6,000 participants, in the end there were almost 44,000 committed people working on almost 1,500 innovative solutions, sending an important, positive signal to everyone: for example with the "EveryoneCounts" project.
Teamwork resulted in a social distancing dashboard - a configurable, digital illustration of the impact of social measures to flatten the infection curve. The portal brings together publicly collected data from all over Germany and visualizes it in a kind of cockpit - for example, anonymized pedestrian frequency measurements, rail traffic and data from Google. The "Lemgo Digital" real-world laboratory of Fraunhofer IOSB-INA was able to contribute to the project as an already active hub for urban data. With this open, growing and community-building platform, it is now possible to demonstrate the impact of minimizing social contacts and motivate responsible individual action. This was just one of just under 1,500 ideas generated by the federal government's hackathon.
