Gertrude Belle Elion (1918-1999). When her grandfather died of cancer, she decided to study chemistry and research the cure for cancer. She was the only woman in her class to enrol at NYU. Her research made her a pioneer in chemotherapy and she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1989.
