Non-contact cavity pressure measurement with piezoelectric sensors is primarily used where high quality and process requirements prevail: for example in products for automotive interiors, high optical quality (e.g. for lenses) or when using very compact injection molds. The 9239B miniature longitudinal measuring plug from Kistler provides customers with a cavity pressure sensor that takes up hardly any installation space (diameter 2.5 mm) and does not come into contact with the molten mass: it is inserted directly behind the wall of the cavity in the mold structure or the compression die, where it measures the pressure-induced compression of the mold during the injection and holding pressure phase. Compared to the predecessor model, the miniature longitudinal measuring plug has a 'Piezostar' crystal specially grown by Kistler, which increases the sensitivity to 27 pC/N. This type of installation means that no marks are left on the component and the sensor is not exposed to abrasion or corrosion. In addition, mounting in a preloaded state allows both compressive and tensile forces to be recorded accurately.
