Intel stops development of smart cameras
Intel abandons the development of high-tech cameras for use in robot technology and 3D scanners, which it has been driving forward for years.
The chip company is focusing its efforts on its core business, a spokesperson told Deutsche Presse-Agentur on Thursday. Intel's RealSense cameras were designed for applications that enable computers to recognize their surroundings and objects. This included, for example, a module for facial recognition. Intel emphasized that it will honor its commitments to existing customers.
Intel had recently come under increased pressure. Due in part to the delays in new processes, arch-rival AMD was able to gain ground in the business with chips for data centers, but also in the PC market. In addition, Apple is gradually phasing out Intel processors in its Mac computers and replacing them with chips developed in-house. The new Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger recently presented new technologies with which the company intends to regain its leading position in chip production in a few years' time. Intel also wants to increasingly act as a contract manufacturer for other chip suppliers.
