Sustainability test bench for software applications
In the ECO:DIGIT project, the German Informatics Society, the Öko-Institut, the Open Source Business Alliance, Adesso and Siemens want to create a platform for evaluating the sustainability of software applications.
When it comes to the sustainability of IT, the focus to date has mostly been on hardware systems and their energy requirements. Software applications are less of a focus, as established methods and standards for assessing their environmental impact are often lacking. If companies provide information in this regard, it is difficult to compare it and assess it with regard to possible greenwashing.
The ECO:DIGIT (Enabling green COmputing and DIGItal Transformation) project aims to change this. The German Informatics Society, the Öko-Institut, the Open Source Business Alliance, Adesso and Siemens are creating an evaluation platform that provides detailed and transparent information about the ecological footprint of software applications. It will not only take into account the resource consumption of the applications and the underlying operating environments, but also the consumption of raw materials and the use of chemicals in the production, transport and disposal of the hardware on which the applications run on end devices, in data centers, in the cloud or at the edge. The project is based on an idea from adesso and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) as part of the "GreenTech Innovation Competition".
"Service companies in particular, where IT is responsible for a large part of the ecological footprint, need reliable information on the resource consumption of their software applications if they want to become more sustainable," emphasizes Dr. Angela Carell, Head of Adesso research. "As there has been a lack of objective and standardized assessment methods in this area to date, committed associations and companies have now joined forces to develop them. The fact that the project is being funded by the BMWK also shows how important this is for the economy."
