New US president also a tough negotiator
Mechanical engineering companies in the southwest do not expect a complete turnaround in trade relations even under a US President Joe Biden.
"Joe Biden will be a tough negotiating partner for Europe," Dietrich Birk, Managing Director of the VDMA industry association in Baden-Württemberg, told the German Press Agency. However, it is already assumed that Biden will bring a different style to the White House than under President Donald Trump. "We expect a new culture of discussion and greater reliability in negotiations," said Birk.
Trump had instigated conflicts with China and the EU with tariffs worth billions and set off a spiral of countermeasures. The USA is an important trading partner for the German mechanical engineering industry. Biden is due to be sworn in on January 20.
"We urgently need open markets," said Birk. Perhaps under Biden there will be a new chance for greater rapprochement. Asia is currently increasing the pressure on the EU and North America, emphasized Birk. China and 14 Asia-Pacific states concluded the world's largest free trade agreement in November.
