At the beginning of 2019, the number of electric cars worldwide had risen to 5.6 million - an increase of 64% compared to the previous year. According to the ZSW, growth has accelerated for the second time in a row. The main drivers are China and the USA.

In terms of vehicle models, Tesla's 'Model 3' was the most successful with 146,310 new registrations worldwide, although it has only been on the market since the end of 2017. This was followed by the BAIC EC Series with 90,640 and the Nissan Leaf with 81,140. The best German model was the BMW 5 Series with 29,040 plug-in hybrids sold - 22nd place. The most successful model overall to date is still the 'Nissan Leaf' with 363,940 registrations, followed by the Tesla 'Model S' with 243,200. The best German model here is the 'BMW i3' in 10th place: 108,560 registrations were registered.
