At the beginning of 2019, the number of electric cars worldwide had risen to 5.6 million - an increase of 64% compared to the previous year. According to the ZSW, growth has accelerated for the second time in a row. The main drivers are China and the USA.

According to the ZSW scientists, most new registrations (just under 233,760) come from the manufacturer Tesla. This is followed by BYD (Build Your Dreams) with 215,800 and BAIC (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding) with around 160,790. The ZSW emphasizes that the latter sell almost exclusively in China, while Tesla is active worldwide. The most successful German manufacturer was BMW in 6th place with 86,940 electric cars, while VW is in 9th place with 53,720 newly registered electric vehicles. In terms of cumulative new registrations, BYD is the most successful with 517,230 registered electric vehicles, closely followed by Tesla (500,390). The best German manufacturer is BMW in 5th place, which is mainly due to its range of plug-in hybrids and the 'BMW i3'. A total of 251,870 e-cars were registered by the Bavarian car manufacturer. VW is in 7th place.
