As undetected insulation faults in unearthed systems can lead to accidents with considerable personal injury and material damage, the monitoring of IT systems by insulation monitors is prescribed by standards. The LK 5896 insulation monitor from Dold's 'Varimeter IMD' series was developed especially for use in modern power supplies, which often contain inverters, power converters, thyristor controllers and directly connected DC components. Due to EMC interference suppression measures, these systems often have high leakage capacitances to earth. The insulation monitor presented here is suitable for system leakage capacitances up to 3000 µF and for voltages up to 1500 V(DC) and 1100 V(AC). It has an adjustable alarm threshold and a pre-warning threshold. The settings for this are made using screwdrivers on rotary knobs. An LED chain and an analog output provide constant information about the current insulation resistance. The insulation monitor does not require a ballast and ensures reliable monitoring even when the system is de-energized. Selective earth fault detection according to L+ and L- enables faults to be localized quickly. A second additional measuring circuit of the insulation monitor allows simultaneous monitoring of an AC system that is galvanically isolated from the main measuring circuit.
