With magnet-free motor

Andrea Gillhuber,

ABB achieves expected IE6 hyper-efficiency

ABB claims to be the first company to achieve the expected efficiency class IE6 with its magnet-free synchronous reluctance motor design. According to ABB's definition, this has 20 percent less energy losses than comparable IE5 motors.

The magnet-free synchronous reluctance motor design, or SynRM design for short, is the latest development of the proven SynRM technology that ABB introduced in 2011. With these motors, the company is targeting users who want to future-proof their equipment. First-time users of IE6 hyper-efficient motors will benefit from lower energy costs and higher productivity while exceeding current sustainability targets.

"Motor-driven systems in industrial plants are major consumers of electricity, so efficiency improvements here can make a significant contribution to reducing emissions and achieving climate protection targets. In addition, significant energy savings can be achieved with the use of our new magnet-free SynRMs, which are expected to reach the efficiency level of the future IE6 class," says Stefan Flöck, Head of the IEC Low Voltage Motors division at ABB Motion. "The SynRM technology is an example of the commitment to innovation embedded in our DNA. As the IE6 SynRM is the same size as the equivalent IE3 asynchronous motor, existing motors can be replaced quickly and easily. This enables customers to upgrade to modern, highly efficient products to future-proof their operations in a world of fluctuating energy costs."

SynRMs combine the performance of permanent magnet motors with the simplicity and ease of maintenance of asynchronous motors to achieve high energy efficiency, ensuring short payback periods. The rotor does not require magnets or windings and has virtually no power losses. In addition, no rare earths are required. A high level of user-friendliness is guaranteed thanks to suitable frequency inverters for the required control options.

ABB's SynRMs are part of the EcoSolutions portfolio, which provides greater transparency on the circular economic value and environmental impact of each product, enabling informed and responsible decision-making. Products in the portfolio meet a range of performance metrics defined in ABB's circular economy framework. They also come with a third-party verified Environmental Product Declaration (ISO 14025 Type III).
