Certification of the BiSS interface

In collaboration with Arteson, the BiSS Association has developed a system for certifying BiSS products. The chairman of the association, Dr. Heiner Flocke, sees this as an important milestone for the open source BiSS interface.

Since its introduction by the company iC-Haus in 2002, the open source BiSS interface for bidirectional sensor communication has been licensed free of charge almost 600 times worldwide and has thus become the standard for controlled drives, among other things. In 2017, BiSS users joined forces to form an international platform known as the BiSS Association, which issues licenses and lists available devices, smart sensors and support services on the association's website alongside technical principles.

Dr. Heiner Flocke, chairman of the association and founder of iC-Haus, explains: "In addition to the worldwide distribution already achieved, technical testing and official confirmation of BiSS conformity are now being added to the establishment as an industry standard. iC-Haus Smart Sensors are also being tested for use in position encoders and have been awarded BiSS certification. In cooperation with Arteson, we are now expanding the tests to include the BiSS Safety Profile Definition and BiSS Line as a single-cable technology."

Marcel Reuter, Managing Director of the BiSS Association, and Dr. Marc Scherer from Arteson are responsible for the design and technical implementation of the certification system: "Our test case definitions are the basis for an autonomous system that tests and documents both BiSS slaves and masters and is integrated into the local network via Ethernet. Among other things, the correct structure of the BiSS frames, the timing of the data communication and the bidirectional register communication are tested in order to award the BiSS certified seal to ensure the interoperability of BiSS devices."
