Integrity of information in embedded systems. A reality check on expected security.
The protection of data is playing an increasingly important role in an increasingly digitalized and technologized world - regardless of whether it concerns our sensitive data in our private lives or when companies want to protect their information assets from theft or malicious modification. Integrity is therefore the keyword of the hour and, alongside availability and confidentiality, is one of the classic objectives in information security (the so-called CIA principle).
Various solutions are usually used to protect and maintain integrity: from cryptographic measures in the software area to special chips and integration into hardware systems, developers are offered various options that appear to promise security.
This article would therefore like to present some approaches to information security and subject them to a reality check. By examining possible attack scenarios, it is possible to understand how cryptographic measures for wireless networks or hardware solutions for CAN systems, for example, can be used profitably and what risks exist, because: where security is written on it, there is not always security in it.
