Sustainability is digital
The motto of Hannover Messe 2024 is Energizing a Sustainable Industry. With numerous research projects, the FZI Research Center for Information Technology presents the possibilities of digitalization on the way to a sustainable and more climate-friendly industry.

© FZI Research Center for Information TechnologySustainability processes are in full swing in many areas of industry and society. Under the motto "Energizing a Sustainable Industry", Hannover Messe 2024 will focus on solutions for a modern industry that is sustainable, climate-neutral and can continue to operate efficiently. An important key factor in achieving these goals is extensive digitalization. To this end, the FZI Research Center for Information Technology is conducting research in areas such as mobility and logistics, robotics, energy and production, applied artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and social participation opportunities in a digital world.
At Hannover Messe 2024, the FZI will be presenting selected projects and demonstrators in Hall 2 at joint stand A36 with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT ) that show how more sustainability can be achieved in industry and what challenges society is facing. The exhibits include the following, for example:
- With 'CoCar NextGen', the FZI presents its new research vehicle in the field of networked and automated driving. Equipped with state-of-the-art sensor technology and computing power for complex requirements, CoCar NextGen is not only designed for special test fields, but is also the first vehicle of its kind to be approved for the entire German road network in real, diverse traffic. The modular design also allows the test vehicle to be optimally adapted to a wide range of research requirements.
The FZI's "Robot-based recycling of e-waste" demonstrator
© FZI Research Center for Information Technology- Electronic waste contains valuable resources. Returning them to the production cycle is complicated due to the complex composition of the components and the diverse and time-consuming steps involved. With the demonstrator 'Robot-based recycling of e-waste', the FZI is presenting a smart robot arm that can sort components according to their recyclability and separate harmful substances. The learned action steps can also be adapted to changing processes or working environments.
- Future mobility solutions will be data-driven and strongly geared towards the needs of users. Personal data is often essential, but is subject to data protection regulations. The 'Anymos - Anonymization for Mobility' competence cluster is investigating the practical use of anonymization techniques in order to preserve the value of the data. Anymos aims to establish a process model that guides companies in identifying the needs and possibilities of anonymization, selecting suitable state-of-the-art methods, applying them correctly and also identifying and evaluating systemic re-identification risks. The joint exhibit with the KIT illustrates the procedure for data-use-value-preserving anonymization using various mobility applications.
- Climate coaches from the Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Klima.Neutral.Digital will be advising small and medium-sized enterprises at Hannover Messe 2024 on their options for action in the transformation to climate neutrality and the development of sustainability strategies. As a basis for discussion, the topics are determined at random via the 'Wheel of Sustainability' and offer a low-threshold introduction to the comprehensive range of sustainability topics.
- Together with selected network partners, the Digital Hub for Applied Artificial Intelligence Karlsruhe will present exciting projects from the field of AI research and application at the FZI stand. The Digital Hub is part of the federal government's de:hub initiative, which was initiated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection in 2017. Its aim is to bring artificial intelligence methods and technologies into application. The hub aims to serve as a central networking platform and nationwide contact point for AI experts from companies, start-ups and research as well as for (future) AI users. Thanks to its strong network, it can support AI experts and users with tailored offers, for example when initiating projects. The hub also focuses on visibility, event organization, sustainable maintenance of the ecosystem and the associated networking.
