Research competitionClear the way for 'Jugend forscht 2020'!
Under the motto "You can do it!", the 'Jugend forscht' competition is entering a new round: for the 55th time, young people are invited to present their innovative research projects - in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology.

2019 national prize in the field of 'Earth and Space Sciences' for Mohamad Al Farhan (20) and Till Felix Weismann (17):
If a part of the starry sky is particularly bright, this can have various causes. A high density of stars is possible, or a comparatively small amount of interstellar dust in this sector swallows up the light of the celestial bodies behind it. With this in mind, Till Felix Weismann and Mohamad Al Farhan wanted to find out what the so-called shield cloud, the brightest region of the Milky Way, is all about. Using stellar data, they proved that a spiral arm - i.e. a spiral galaxy - of the Milky Way probably exists there at a distance of 6,000 light years. As no large dark clouds can be detected, a lot of light reaches the Earth from this area. The results of the young researchers contribute to further understanding of the structure of our galaxy.
