Hannover Messe 2024
The OPC UA Cloud Initiative
At the Hannover Messe, the OPC Foundation presented a new initiative to implement interoperability between IT and cloud platforms. Major international cloud providers and large production companies are supporting the new initiative.
The OPC Foundation has unveiled a new initiative to implement interoperability between IT and cloud platforms using OPC UA, targeting applications such as data analytics using AI, industrial data spaces, digital product passports and industrial metaverse applications, and digital twins. The initiative aims to create a cloud reference architecture to provide best practices and optimized profiles of OPC UA standards for broader data exchange, in compliance with global regulations such as the EU Data Act or the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). In addition, the initiative will cover the use of OPC UA Companion Specs and other OPC UA information models within cloud services.
OPC UA also in IT and cloud applications
"OPC UA has established itself as an industrial interoperability standard in on-premises and OT environments, in field-level communication and in industrial edge applications," says Stefan Hoppe, President of the OPC Foundation. "It is therefore not surprising that OPC UA users are looking to leverage their existing investments in OPC UA information models and communication patterns in IT and cloud applications by enhancing secure, interoperable cloud architectures for big data analytics, digital twins and AI."
The major cloud providers are involved
The initiative is supported in particular by leading companies in the cloud industry such as Alibaba Cloud, AWS, Huawei, Microsoft and SAP, as well as major system operators. This joint effort aims to harmonize existing working groups and initiate new working groups for cloud-centric applications, with the goal of leveraging and expanding OPC UA and promoting interoperability between cloud solutions. This strategic initiative is intended to reduce costs and improve the usability of OPC UA information models for cloud-based use cases.
The OPC Foundation invites interested companies and experts to participate in the OPC UA Cloud Initiative.
