The digital transformation is also in full swing in the mechanical engineering sector. This is the conclusion reached by the VDMA Software and Digitalization Association in its 'IT Report 2018', for which around 100 companies were surveyed on investment projects and IT trend topics.
While many IT trends such as cloud computing, virtualization, apps, etc. have shown a steady increase in importance in previous VDMA IT studies, this no longer applies to IoT platforms. In 2016, more than 60% of companies said that they were unaware of the topic or that the solutions were not relevant to their own company. Today, the picture is completely different. Platforms are important for three quarters of companies and almost 30% already have solutions in place. By 2020, a total of 50 percent of the companies surveyed want to use IoT platforms.
