What options for IoT connectivity are currently available in the manufacturing and industrial environment to implement big data applications? Computer&AUTOMATION has compiled a selection of current products from this area in a series of images.

With the CloudConnect portfolio, Siemens is simplifying data transfer within the IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) to cloud-based solutions. This includes the 'Simatic CP 1545-1' communication processor, which is designed for use with the 'Simatic S7-1500' in modern automation environments. The industrial IoT gateway 'Simatic CloudConnect 7' is also being launched for the cloud connection of existing systems. Instead of connecting each individual sensor to the cloud, the 'Simatic S7-1500' can be used to aggregate field data and link it to additional process-relevant information if required. The 'CP 1545-1' then transmits this to the cloud platform. The communication processor has an integrated SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) firewall to protect the controller from unauthorized access. The CloudConnect functionality is configured in the TIA Portal with just a few input masks. Two variants are available to users for connecting existing systems with the Industrial IoT Gateway: 'Simatic CC712' enables the connection of a 'Simatic S7-300' or 'S7-400' via Industrial Ethernet using the S7 protocol. Simatic CC716', on the other hand, supports the connection of up to seven Simatic S7 controllers via Industrial Ethernet or Profibus/MPI interface. The existing automation program does not need to be changed in order to select and transfer the essential information. In addition, the data read from subordinate 'S7' stations via 'CloudConnect 7' can be made available as OPC UA variables, which enables standardized data exchange with MES systems or HMI and controllers from other manufacturers, for example.
