Finding and navigating to smaller lesions in the body is important for the early detection of cancer in order to be able to perform precise biopsies. At this early stage of the disease, patients recover more quickly from minimally invasive procedures because the wound healing time is shorter. However, these approaches have only become possible thanks to the continuous improvement of medical imaging. Dr. Ali Kamen (42) from Siemens Healthcare in Princeton, New Jersey, is using his inventions to help surgeons navigate their instruments during surgery by superimposing previously captured images onto surgical images. The software, which is based on Kamen's patents, can be found in modern ultrasound systems and X-ray machines from Siemens.
