The Eclipse Foundation, one of the world's largest open source software foundations, in collaboration with the Eclipse Sparkplug Working Group, has now announced the release of the Sparkplug 3.0 specification. Sparkplug is an open software specification that enables mission-critical OT clients to leverage industry standards, including MQTT, to seamlessly integrate data from their applications, sensors, devices and gateways into most IIoT infrastructures. The Sparkplug 3.0 specification represents the first version of the specification to be managed under the Eclipse Foundation specification process. It also represents the appropriate formalization of the specification from version 2.2.

Standard in a year?

The goal of Sparkplug 3.0 is to leverage the Eclipse Foundation's open and vendor-neutral specification process to remove ambiguities in version v2.2 and add explicit normative statements while maintaining backward compatibility. In addition, the Sparkplug specification has begun the process of becoming an international standard with ISO/IEC. To support this standardization effort, the Eclipse Foundation has been granted "Publicly Available Specification (PAS) Submitter" status by the Joint Technology Committee (JTC) 1 of ISO/IEC. The PAS process is a fast-track process that allows a specification to be approved as an ISO/IEC standard in less than a year, as opposed to a full process that can take up to four years. The transition of Sparkplug to a recognized industry standard specification is expected to further accelerate the growth and adoption of Sparkplug across multiple industries.
