Siemens is adding an RFID reader to the 'Simatic RF600' family of ultra-high frequency devices. The Simatic RF615R in a compact design (133 mm x 155 mm x 45 mm) has an integrated, circularly polarized antenna and an additional external antenna connection. A small RFID gate can be set up by connecting the additional external antenna. The device supports OPC UA as an IoT interface and communicates via the data model of the OPC UA AutoID Companion specification V1.0. This enables manufacturer-independent communication in automation as well as a standardized connection to cloud applications such as 'MindSphere' via an industrial IoT gateway such as 'Ruggedcom RX1400' with CloudConnect. The analysis of the recorded data makes KPIs such as system availability, capacity utilization or energy-saving potential transparent. Thanks to the circularly polarized antenna, the reader offers flexibility in the alignment of the RFID transponders to be captured. With one digital input and output each, the device offers a simple trigger option for decentralized reading points as well as local reaction to reading events. Configuration, commissioning and diagnostic tools can be accessed via a web browser.
