Promicon has added safety modules for motion-based safety to the Varimotion multi-axis system. The safety modules are designed so that an impermissible movement is detected in just 2 ms, which means that the safety distances can be kept very short when designing functional safety. The modules have functions such as SS0, SS1, SS2, SLS, SOS and SDI and are suitable for applications in accordance with performance level d or SIL 2. In addition, a safe channel is available for monitoring the axis standstill. A parameter for filtering the movement is available so that brief changes in speed or position, such as jolts, do not lead to false triggering of safety functions. Furthermore, a safe output is available for each axis to control a holding brake in order to brake the drive with the least possible delay. When using the monitoring modules, servomotors with suitable feedback systems are used. However, use is not limited to servomotors; other drive designs such as linear motors, torque motors or tubular motors can also be operated directly in conjunction with the safety modules and servo controllers. The servo controllers and safety modules are matched to each other in such a way that only an RJ45 connection is required between the devices.
