Sensor-Technik Wiedemann presents the latest generation of the mBMS battery management system for lithium-ion batteries. As a modular kit of hardware and software components, this system forms both an 'off-the-shelf' solution and a development basis for specific industrial and vehicle-compatible battery management systems. The target applications are electric and hybrid vehicles for road and ground transportation or large industrial storage systems for grid stabilization. As an 'off-the-shelf' solution, the battery management system comprises three key modules: the central BMS (Battery Main Supervisor), a large number of cell monitoring modules (Cell Sensor Circuit) and the current sensor (Power Measurement Board). All modules are suitable for battery voltages up to 800 V, and two sensor types for 300 and 600 A are available for current measurement. All necessary sensor and actuator functions are implemented: Monitoring of all cell voltages with the LTC6804 precision measuring module from Linear Technology, shunt-based current measurement, all-pole disconnection of the battery with built-in contactor diagnostics, evaluation of crash and interlock signals, adaptive pre-charging of the intermediate circuit, power prediction in charging and discharging direction, state-of-charge (SOC) determination with coulomb counting, automatic capacity determination. All common classes of lithium-ion cells are supported. Communication with the higher-level infrastructure takes place via CAN interfaces.
