Parallel to her acting career, Hedy Lamarr (1914-2000), whose real name was Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, invented a remote radio control for torpedoes, which was patented in 1942. The so-called "frequency hopping" is still used today in Bluetooth connections. The frequencies changed independently and were largely immune to interference. As the emigrant daughter of Austrian Jews, Lamarr put her invention at the service of the Allies.
