A huge obstacle on the way to Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT) is still the separation between the IT world and production technology or 'Operational Technology' (OT). Together with SAP, Mitsubishi Electric wants to close this gap.

The AVNU Alliance and the EEC announced a cooperation at the end of November in Beijing. Their aim is to promote interoperability in industrial control technology.

Avnu Alliance / IIC / OPC Foundation
17 automation an information technology suppliers unite to drive interoperability for IIoT and Industrie 4.0 applications. For that the companies are working together with Avnu Alliance, IIC and OPC Foundation.
The successful continuing development of the Industry 4.0 concept depends among other things on smooth orchestration of very different devices. Meaning that central importance attaches to the communication interface between the building blocks.

OPC UA forms a universal application interface thanks to its address space, whereas TSN supplements standard Ethernet with real-time properties and allows data transfer rates in the gigabit range. It therefore makes sense to combine the two technologies.
LPWAN technologies such as LoRaWAN, Sigfox or NarrowBand IoT have specific advantages and disadvantages compared to other data transmission technologies. But which ones? And to what extent are they really suitable for industrial applications? Five experts from the industry give their views.

At the end of 2014, the OPC Foundation announced that it would achieve the status of a globally recognized standard for the Industrial Internet of Things IIoT by 2019 at the latest. The OPC Foundation has now provided an update on the current status at the trade fair.

Profibus & Profinet International
The safety-oriented Profisafe bus protocol from PI (Profibus & Profinet International) makes it possible to run fail-safe and standard communication over one and the same connection. In future, Profisafe communication will also be possible via OPC UA.

Diamond, eks Engel, Muckenhaupt&Nusselt
The companies Diamond, eks Engel FOS and Muckenhaupt & Nusselt have agreed on a cooperation for optical data transmission solutions. This was announced by the managing directors at a press conference at SPS IPC Drives.
