Product innovationsNews from the field of sensor technology
In the smart factory of the future, nothing will work without sensor technology as the 'bottom floor'! Sensor technology remains indispensable as the basis of industrial production systems. Computer&AUTOMATION presents current trends in the field of sensors in a series of images.

For position measurement in machines and systems with Siemens controllers, Heidenahin offers absolute rotary encoders with a 'Drive-Cliq' interface, which supply position and operating data reliably and directly to the controllers. Various versions are available for optimum connectivity. For example, users can choose between encoders with optical or inductive scanning. Optical and inductive encoders are compatible in many cases. While optical encoders enable higher accuracies, inductive encoders offer robustness and resistance to contamination as well as more compact dimensions. In addition to singleturn encoders, multiturn encoders with gears for counting full revolutions are also available. As variants with and without integral bearings and with different shaft designs and diameters, they round off the range of rotary encoders with Drivs-Cliq interface. Many encoders with this interface also have special features: For example, for temperature measurement, the optically scanned rotary encoders 'ECN 1324S' and 'EQN 1336S' with integral bearing and the inductive rotary encoders 'ECI 1319S', 'EQN 1331S' and 'ECI 4090S' without integral bearing, both the 'KTY 84-130' semiconductor sensor and PT 1000 sensors can be connected. The robust inductive encoders 'ECI 1319S' and 'EQI 1331S' without integral bearing are particularly suitable for applications with high mechanical loads on the rotor up to 600 m/s² and the stator up to 400 m/s². In addition to the 'ROC 424S' and 'ROQ 436S' optical encoders with integral bearing and solid shaft, the 'ECN 424S' and 'EQN 436S' optical encoders with integral bearing and hollow shaft are also available. All encoders with a 'Drive-Cliq' interface are certified for safety-related applications in accordance with SIL 2 (to EN 61508) or category 3, performance level d (to EN ISO 13849).
