Meinrad Happacher,

These are the trends for 2023

What will be the key issues surrounding the cloud in 2023? Peter Schmidt, Director of Business Development Public Cloud Services at Syntax, sees five key trends in particular.

Trend 1: Cloud-native development and serverless applications

Companies use the cloud because of its great flexibility and scalability, among other things. Both advantages come into play with service-oriented applications and the use of container solutions such as Kubernetes, as well as in the abstraction between the application and the underlying computer performance with serverless functions. Cloud providers and hyperscalers provide fully managed platforms on which functions can be scaled automatically and according to individual requirements. Other development methods are also being used in this context, such as those based on DevOps methods using CI/CD pipelines. IT administration is changing and more and more IT departments are using managed services from providers instead of setting up their own infrastructure. This reduces the workload for IT departments and increases their productivity.

Trend 2: No-code and low-code

Another ongoing trend is the democratization of software through low-code/no-code platforms. Silo thinking between IT and specialist departments is no longer appropriate - and not just because of the chronic shortage of developers. Future-proof companies use cloud-based coding solutions to incorporate the knowledge and experience of all employees into the digitally mapped business processes. Many cloud providers make numerous tools available for this purpose, which can also be used by colleagues without programming skills. In close collaboration with IT and other specialist departments, new applications are created that map individual business requirements and scale with the company's needs.

Trend 3: Integration of ERP system and cloud service

Now that more and more companies have decided to migrate their ERP system to the cloud, there is another logical development that goes beyond lift and shift: the integration of ERP processes with cloud-based platform services. As the logistical backbone, the ERP system controls all processes in the company. The opportunities for optimization are correspondingly great: even small adjustments to sub-processes can have a major positive impact. In order to identify the relevant "adjusting screws" and adjust them in the next step, companies will optimize their processes even more by using analytics and functions for AI and machine learning. This development is being accelerated by the fact that more and more providers are offering ready-made patterns and solutions for specific requirements. This reduces the barriers to entry, for example when creating data lakes, and enables quick first quick wins. Those who rely on the public cloud, or a hyperscaler, can start small and then expand capacities step by step.

Trend 4: Cybersecurity is becoming a driver for the cloud

Peter-Schmidt: "Moving to the cloud is also becoming increasingly attractive in terms of IT security!"

For a long time, the cloud was viewed critically as an operating environment, especially in terms of security. Today, those responsible tend to see the advantages in terms of security and disaster protection. There are various ways to use the cloud to improve your own IT security. These include, for example, cloud-based solutions for thread detection, disaster protection through virtual desktop solutions or simply outsourcing backups to an external failover data center. For many companies, a lift and shift migration also means an increase in security. Companies that move their IT to the cloud and operate it there often primarily see infrastructural benefits such as availability, scalability and flexibility. However, moving to the cloud will also become increasingly attractive in terms of IT security. The reason: experienced providers have an established structure for cybersecurity, which they make available to customers in the form of managed cloud security services. For example, companies benefit from a round-the-clock Security Operations Center (SOC) or Security Information & Event Management (SIEM). Setting up and maintaining the required level of security and the integration of security services for hybrid cloud environments would be extremely costly for many companies - but by using cloud services in combination with a Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP), they are very easy to book and use from the customer's perspective.

Trend 5: Integration services for SaaS

A large number of flexibly deployable PaaS and SaaS models is one of the key advantages of the cloud. However, the more different software is in use, the quicker it can become confusing - and the variety can turn from a blessing into a curse. User-friendliness in particular suffers when different solutions from different providers are available via a cloud platform but are not necessarily integrated with each other. This is why the trend is moving towards integration services that enable users to authenticate themselves only once via single sign-on, for example, and then use all applications and services available at their authorization level. These services also enable the seamless integration of user-friendly user interfaces into complex backend systems through process automation solutions.
