The EcoTech product label
Siemens has announced the introduction of a new approach for a sustainable product label - Siemens EcoTech. With this, the company wants to set a new standard for transparency in the industry.
Siemens EcoTech is designed to give customers a comprehensive insight into product performance with regard to selected environmental criteria. Initially, a number of products from the entire Siemens portfolio for infrastructure and industrial applications will be awarded the Siemens EcoTech label. It will gradually be extended to other relevant Siemens product families that meet the strict criteria.
"With Siemens EcoTech, we are paving the way for a new level of transparency," says Judith Wiese, Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG and Chief People and Sustainability Officer. "The Siemens EcoTech label represents our commitment to empowering our customers with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions to support their sustainability goals. We want sustainability to be at the heart of every one of our products."
Data from the environmental product declaration
Siemens uses extensive data provided in the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) to assess the life cycle performance of a product based on a set of sound eco-design criteria in the following three dimensions: sustainable materials, optimal use, and value recovery and circular economy. Ecodesign criteria include various aspects such as the use of low-carbon materials, the use of sustainable packaging, energy efficiency, durability, circular economy considerations and recyclability. These insights form the basis for the Siemens EcoTech Profile (SEP) - a product data sheet on the comparative performance of a product in areas such as materials, design, use phase and end of life.

First products with EcoTech label
One of the products bearing the Siemens EcoTech label at the time of launch is the recently launched Sentron ECPD protective switching device. The protective switching device can replace up to ten conventional products with a single device. Compared to conventional solutions, this reduces the amount of material used in production by 1.53 kg (depending on the application, by up to 80 percent for electronics, 90 percent for metals and 90 percent for plastics) and the associated CO2 emissions by 50 percent. Another example of a Siemens EcoTech product from the first phase of the rollout is the Simatic IPC BX-39 industrial PC, which is more than 30 percent more energy-efficient than its predecessor product.
