The current, mostly rigid hardware structures pose a major problem here. Software-defined manufacturing, which is derived from the findings of IT, promises a remedy. The end-to-end use of the digital twin, a reorganization of engineering combined with further developed tools and new control architectures with extended interfaces point to promising solutions.
