Renesas Electronics is announcing a security solution based on the Renesas RZ/G-Linux platform for the end of 2019. This is intended to reduce the time required for users to obtain IEC 62443-4-2 certification - a new international standard for security technologies to protect industrial control systems from cyberattacks that pose a risk to human life and the economy. The IEC 62443 security standard covers all levels (operators, system integrators and plant manufacturers) involved in the production of industrial control systems, as well as all stakeholders, such as companies and organizations active in industry and public infrastructure. Within this standard, endpoint devices such as sensors and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) must be certified to IEC 62443-4. However, the certification process represents a considerable effort for developers. To help developers with the challenges of certification, Renesas is developing an industrial safety solution that supports IEC 62443-4. Combined with the results of the Civil Infrastructure Platform (CIP) project activities, the Renesas RZ/G-Linux platform security solution enables users to reduce the time to obtain IEC 62443-4-2 certification by up to six months. Within IEC 62443-4, IEC 62443-4-1 addresses compliance with the development process and IEC 62443-4-2 addresses compliance with technical device requirements. Renesas is working within the newly established CIP Security Working Group on the development of secure OSS (Open Source Software) according to IEC 62443-4-2, guidelines for the implementation of security functions and applications with OSS as well as test procedures and test environments required for certification according to IEC 62443-4-2. Renesas supports embedded Linux devices in industrial environments with the RZ/G-Linux platform. This complete solution combines an RZ/G microprocessor (MPU) and a fully verified Linux package with very long support. The new safety solution includes all the software and documentation required for IEC 62443-4-2 certification. The new IEC 62443-4-2 compliant security solution is expected to be available by the end of 2019, starting with the DC/G2M MPU. The solutions for other RZ/G2-MPUs will follow successively.
