When inline skating or in motor sports - protectors protect the back, shoulders and joints, which is particularly important in the event of a fall. Protective equipment is usually made of rigid plastic and therefore restricts the athlete's freedom of movement. Not so the protector from Anna Fleck and Adrian Fleck: it consists of a soft silicone shell filled with a starchy liquid. This solidifies into a solid when a lot of force is applied, providing reliable protection against injuries. The siblings not only used and optimized the unusual, so-called non-Newtonian property of the starchy liquid, they also developed a measuring apparatus with which they compared the effectiveness of their 'FleckProtec' with that of commercially available products. The siblings were awarded the German Chancellor's prize for the most original work.
