To what extent are IT and engineering freelancers correct in their assessment of market value during negotiations? According to the Gulp survey, freelancers seem to know exactly what to do: 60.4% stated that their hourly rate demands were correct. 25.9% usually overestimated and 13.7% usually underestimated their value. Compared to 2015, the proportion of those who were usually spot on has hardly changed. However, the proportion of "over-claimers" was still 17.7% in 2015, meaning that more and more freelancers appear to be building a significant negotiation buffer into their claims in 2016 in order to achieve the desired result.
