Leadframes are separated from a continuous strip of material by progressive die cutting and further processed into metal-plastic composite components in subsequent processes. Leadframes can be designed with the most delicate web or slot widths for machine assembly with SMD electronic components. The Optiv Classic 443 coordinate measuring machine from Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence is ideal for monitoring their production quality. With its image-processing vision sensor, it enables the automated optical measurement of lead frames from the sampling phase through to the series inspection of large quantities. The first step is to define the position of the lead frame in the working volume of the measuring machine. After a few mouse clicks, the PC-DMIS function 'QuickAlign' automatically calculates an optimum workpiece alignment based on the selected geometry elements. Thanks to 'QuickFeature', the 'PC-DMIS CAD' measuring software automatically recognizes the element type when creating the measuring sequence while the user moves the mouse pointer over the CAD model. The recognized element is transferred to the measurement routine with a single click. During the subsequent execution of the measurement routine, 'MultiCapture' simultaneously measures all geometries that lie within a camera image field and optimizes the entire measurement process. Using a high-resolution CMOS camera in conjunction with a 10× CNC motor zoom, the coordinate measuring machine captures the 2D geometries of the lead frames to be inspected with sub-pixel accuracy. The lead frames are evaluated by comparing the measuring points with CAD data.
