Exports above pre-crisis level
The German electrical and electronics industry significantly increased its exports in the first half of 2021 and exceeded pre-crisis levels.
Exports worth €108.3 billion exceeded the previous year's figure by 13% and were also 1.8% higher than in the pre-crisis year 2019, according to the industry association ZVEI. Imports grew by a cumulative 17.6% year-on-year to €103.9 billion in the same period.
The five largest buyers of German electrical exports in the first half of this year were China, the USA, France, the Netherlands and Poland. Business with the People's Republic of China grew: compared to June 2020, the increase was 13.2% to €2.2 billion, while the German electrical industry recorded an increase of 11.5% to €12.3 billion in the first half of the year.
Exports to the USA and France also increased. Exports to the USA grew by 23.3% to 1.6 billion euros in a monthly comparison and by 8.0% to 9.1 billion euros in a half-year comparison. In June, exports to France increased by 17.8% to €1.1 billion and by 21.6% (to €6.7 billion) in a half-year comparison.
Clear growth in Europe
Deliveries to the Netherlands also recovered significantly: In June, they climbed by 22.4% year-on-year to €961 million and from January to June this year by 17.4% to €5.5 billion. The Netherlands thus displaced Poland from 4th position in the customer ranking. Exports to Poland grew somewhat more slowly in June, rising by 8.7% to 903 million euros. In the first half of the year, they increased by 16.0% to 5.4 billion euros.
Italy, the Czech Republic, Austria, the UK and Switzerland took 6th to 10th place in the customer ranking in the first half of 2021. "In the period from January to June, industry exports to Italy (+26.7% to €5.4 billion), Austria (+19.4% to €4.7 billion) and the UK (+17.7% to €4.4 billion) in particular recorded strong growth," says ZVEI economic expert Jürgen Polzin. Deliveries to the Czech Republic (+13.0% to €5.0 billion) and Switzerland (+5.9% to €3.6 billion) grew at a slightly slower pace compared to the previous year.
In the most recent reporting month of June 2021, exports to the UK (+37.7% to €875 million) and the Czech Republic (+34.5% to €879 million) saw the strongest growth. Exports to Italy (+23.0% to €915 million), Austria (+22.7% to €837 million) and Switzerland (+11.8% to €632 million) also increased compared to the previous year.
