Siemens researchers have developed a new type of electric motor for airplanes: Weighing just 50 kg, it delivers a continuous output that is five times higher than that of comparable drives. Installed in an aerobatic airplane, it has now completed its first flight in front of the public.

... disruptive to the state of the art is something Siemens wants to increasingly promote. The development of electric drives for aircraft is the first project of the start-up organization 'next47' planned for October 2016. Siemens intends to bundle its commitment to start-ups in this organization. Chief Technology Officer Siegfried Russwurm will head the new unit on an interim basis.
