Siemens cooperates with Chinese government
The Siemens Group wants to further develop the potential of digitalization in China. In the presence of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Siemens CEO Joe Kaeser signed extensive cooperation agreements in Berlin.
"Digitalization and innovation are crucial for China's economic development. As a leading force in industrial digitalization, we at Siemens are pleased to play an important role for China to unlock the full potential of the country's economic development," said Joe Kaeser, CEO of Siemens. "With the agreements signed today, we are reaffirming our more than 145-year relationship with the country - and taking it to a new level in the digital industrial age."
Based on the existing cooperation between Siemens and the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), both parties have signed a memorandum of understanding. It defines the joint activities in the areas of innovation and the use of digital technologies. In response to the 'Made in China 2025' and 'Internet+' initiatives, Siemens will offer digital enterprise solutions that contribute to the modernization and transformation of the Chinese industrial sector. In addition, the German company intends to intensify its research and development and talent development in China in the field of digital manufacturing. Innovations are to be developed together with Chinese partners and Siemens will participate in nationwide and local innovation projects. One focus is the further development of Siemens' cloud-based open IoT operating system 'MindSphere' in the areas of city management and smart grids. The company has also agreed a strategic cooperation with the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), which provides for more intensive cooperation in the areas of industrial IoT and intelligent manufacturing.
The cooperation between Siemens and China dates back to 1872, when the company introduced the first pointer telegraph. In October 1985, the company and the then Chinese Ministry of Machinery, Electrical and Electronics signed an agreement on intensive cooperation in the promotion of the machinery, electrical and electronics industries - the first such agreement reached after the country's opening-up and reform. Siemens and the NDRC renewed this agreement in 2011 and 2016.
