Daimler builds electric car for EQ series in France

Daimler is spending half a billion euros to set up production for one of the planned electric cars of the new EQ brand at its Smart plant in Hambach, France. The factory is to produce an electric compact car and become part of the corresponding production network.

In addition to Germany, Daimler also plans to manufacture electric vehicles of the new EQ product brand in France in the future.

For the first time, Mercedes-Benz cars will be built in France, said CEO Dieter Zetsche on May 18, 2018 after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron thanked Zetsche via Twitter. "Your decision to invest in France shows that France is back," the head of state wrote in English. Among other things, he wants to drive forward the modernization of the French economy.

To date, the 800 or so employees in Hambach have exclusively built small cars under the Smart brand - but according to the information provided, this also includes two fully electric models. Daimler plans to launch at least ten all-electric cars under the EQ brand by 2022.

The 500 million euros for Hambach will be invested in the plant and in the development of the vehicle to be built there. The first EQ will be an SUV, which will be built in Bremen from 2019 and later also in Beijing.
